Vintage Wednesday is a new feature here on the blog for 2015. Each Wednesday we will look at Vintage photos on a certain theme (this week is children) to explore the wonderfully rich history of the bicycle.
The picture above is from the early 1900’s and the three children are on Velocipedes, the very first type of bicycle. The Velocipedes either had two wheels at the back (more of a trike design) or a small wheel at the back and large one at the front, the latter being quite tricky to ride by all accounts. This picture is from the Latvian National History archive and must have been taken when smiling in photographs was not the done thing!
I love this photo, not sure of the exact era but am guessing 30/40’s from the clothes. It shows that Mothers worrying about there kids safety on bikes is not a new thing!
This is another cracker of French children mastering the skill and enjoying the thrill of the humble bike. France was one of the first countries to embrace cycling.
This a beautiful photo by photographer Peter Miller, Margaux Wine Harvest Girls from 1957.
This is perhaps my favourite photo, taken by the late Guardian photographer, Don McPhee. Two boys on bikes in the mining village of Holmewood, Derbyshire, 1973. Its almost as if the two boys come from different eras, the boy in the foreground with his super cool chopper and denim jacket looks to be ffrom a differnt time from the other boy with his traditional bike and overcoat.
Tweet @CycleChic or post to our Facebook Page us with any vintage bike photos you love and we will see if we can include them in one of our vintage Wednesday features.
