No. 1 Be seen. Cool reflective wear is all the rage so get involved. Be seen, be stylsih and be safe! It’s amazing how much more confident you can feel when night cycling, knowing you are visible to traffic around you. Make sure you have reliable front and rear lights and then get some reflective outerwear or accessories. Shop Reflective for some inspiration.
No. 2 Be Dry – We seem to be having a particularly rainy winter so far… so you need to be prepared. We are particularly fond of the Riding Hood Cape Parka. It has the advantage of a cape in that you can put ot over your regular coats and it will cover your legs as well as top half. But unlike some capes that can be tent-like and blow about in the wind. This one can be tightened with the parka-style drawstrings. It also has a reflective strip down the back so you are covering no. 1 and 2!
3. Be Vintage – Just because the weather is dreary doesn’t mean your outfit has to be! Winter is a great time to get your vintage wool garments out. We are big fans of wooly jumpers and cardigans, they keep you warm but also let your skin breath. Tweed is also a great vintage fabric for cycling in, tweed coats, trousers and even tweed helmet covers like the Yakkay pictured above.
4. Be Glam: Dont let the drizzle ruin your look. Invest in a mirrored bike helmet so you can re-apply lippy on the go and perhaps try waterproof mascara if you get streamy eyes in the cold weather. Helmets can also prevent your hair getting wet and frizzy. Pop a helmet on and then put long hair in a low ponytail and stick it down the back of your coat to keep your locks dry and protected.
5. Be Kind to your bike. Keep your bike indoors or under shelter in the winter months, it will repay you by needing less maintenaince. You can even make a feature of it in your living room or hall with items like The Cyclehoop Bikeshelf. Another good tip if your stuck for space is to bring your sofa forward a foot and park your bike behind it. Have a look at our Pin Page of bicycles in beautiful interiors if you need some inspiration.
6. Drink tea – You can’t beat a good old cuppa when the weather turns cold. Tea before you ride and tea after. We blumin love the stuff and would struggle to get through winter without it. Shop bicycle mugs in our homeware section
