Team Cyclechic was out in force at the Cycle Show 2009 at Earl’s Court this weekend. As expected there was a significant amount of Lycra and an awful lot of carbon-fibre racing bikes with price tags that would make a grown woman cry, but in amongst all that there were some fabulous signs that women are making their mark within the cycling world. A small, but significant, proportion of the exhibits seemed to be aimed at the ladies. Even if some of it was strictly look but dream on.
Take this fabulous Swarovski crystal-studded low-rider by Ben Wilson. These babies are hand-made to order with more than 110,000 crystals used – assuming you have cash coming out of your ears. There’s no price-tag on this bike, but when a designer has ‘price on application (hold your breath)’ as a guide, you know it won’t come cheap.
Slightly less pricey, but no less stunning, was this beautiful shopper by Viva. We were delighted to see the amount of shoppers on show at the Cycle Show, in a range of glorious colours and styles but all united in their elegance and class. We were also pleased to see the number of beautiful panniers on offer like this gorgeous Basil Blossom Double Pannier.
Amid the hi-vis jackets and polyester we spotted this beautiful cape by Ana Nichoola which put us in mind of our own, equally fabulous cycling cape.
We also loved the bespoke bike created by Cyclodelic for their stand.
We came away from the show feeling positive about the attention now being paid to female cyclists. Female-friendly products were in the minority, but considering a few years ago there was barely any choice whatsoever for a lady who likes to look good on board her bike, things are moving in the right direction.
