Women are just great at creating groups – not just one group, but group upon group, connecting, sharing, introducing one friend to another. And in these current times, when there may be some restrictions on our freedom to get-out, meet up, network and socialise, we begin to realise just how important being part of a group really is.
Group mentality is something that runs strong in our next featured women’s cycling group, the ‘Treacle Tarts’ WI Cycling Group in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
It all began four years ago with a one-off activity for the WI ladies, an August evening’s bike ride. They loved it so much that they asked one of their members, Anne Taylor, to lead a sub-group within the Treacle Tarts (one of many – there are also groups for darts, books, walking, textiles…), and so it began.
The group have gone cycling together every Tuesday evening ever since. There are women of all ages – from twenty-somethings to eighty-somethings. Many of them hadn’t ridden since their school days, but with the support and encouragement of their Treacle Tart pals, they have gained confidence and fitness, and had fun along the way.
Just like Caroline in our previous case study, Anne is a Breeze Champion, meaning she is supported by British Cycling’s ‘Let’s Ride’ campaign to lead rides for women and girls. The rides, which also include monthly Sunday mornings, are open to all women – not only the Treacle Tart ladies – and all abilities. ‘No one gets left behind’ she says. Find out more on the Breeze website or on the Treacle Tarts WI page.
