The Government are taking no bold action to tackle climate change. It’s a disgrace. They have set the goal of net zero by 2050 but where is the plan for change? And 2050 is too late. We need action and we need it fast. One activist movement who are getting their voice heard are Extinction Rebellion (XR). They propose a people’s assembly to take the power from the government and give it to the people to make the decision and take the steps forward to avert the climate crisis.
And given Boris Johnson’s decision yesterday to suspend parliament – the voice for our democratic rights needs to be shouted more loudly than ever.
XR are calling all Cyclists
One way as a cyclist, you can get involved is to join XR and Stop Killing Cyclists in their protest ‘National funeral for the unknown cyclists’ on the September 7th. The purpose it to put pressure on the government, ahead of 2019 Autumn Budget, to invest 6 Billion in cycling – making it safer and more accessible.
Cycling, as we all know is a sustainable and healthy mode of transport but it is still dangerous in many areas. This is one clear way we can reduce emissions – but the government continues to give the fossil fuel industries massive tax breaks whilst investing measly amounts in green infrastructure.
If you feel strongly about this, join XR and fellow cyclists and show your support for change. There’s sure to be a great comradery and power that comes from people cycling through the street together.
When: Sat 7th September 12-3
Where: Lincoln Fields, London.
